The Adolescent SASSI - notes for Commissioners

Models of Care friendly:
The SASSI operates at many levels. For non-specialist Tier 1 workers it can be used to identify, with a high degree of accuracy, those young people who will benefit from referral into a Tier 2 specialist assessment. It can provide assurance that Tier 1 workers without specialist knowledge of drug and alcohol work are nevertheless capable of ensuring that large numbers of young drug or alcohol misusers are not slipping through the net.

  • At Tier 2 level, the SASSI provides a large amount of useful and relevant assessment information, informs care planning, and motivates and engages the client.
  • With Tiers 3 & 4 the SASSI provides psychological profiling which can sharpen assessment, inform interventional strategy and plot progress and outcomes.
The fact that the SASSI is useful across the Tiers means that it can give a cohesiveness to the client journey, as the information it carries is informative and accessible to each new practitioner involved in the case. This means that the client does not have to keep re-telling their story, and the practitioner receiving the referral can use the SASSI profile to help them prepare for and immediately establish rapport with the new client.
