SASSI as a support

With these cautions ringing in our ears, it is worth bearing in mind that while the SASSI is used in many English speaking (and other) countries, it has never successfully been challenged in a court of law. Normed as it is on internationally recognised definitions of dependency and abuse, it serves to sharpen practitioners' definitions and perceptions, standardise assessments, and give authority to what might otherwise be seen to be arbitrary decisions. It serves to enhance the quality of client / worker interactions, and helps to provide a wealth of collateral information which can be extremely useful in guiding interventions. For third party payers and commissioners of expensive services, it can also add weight to referral and disposal decisions.
