This psychometric screening instrument can be used either for mass screening of particular populations, e.g. prison inmates, or as an adjunct to an individual "subjective " assessment of substance misuse.
In the former case, it will give a profile of the demographic distribution of categories of substance misuse within populations, and highlight individuals at risk and therefore in need of more in-depth assessment.
In the latter, it provides objective information which can support and enhance the subjective assessment of a professional worker. It is this function which is most sought after, and what follows is an account of its usefulness in this context.
