About the SASSI:

The Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory is a multi-functional psychometric screening instrument which identifies substance misuse issues (illicit, prescribed drugs & alcohol) with a high degree of accuracy, even when the individual is unable or unwilling to acknowledge a problem or symptoms associated with it.

It is normed on the internationally recognised DSM V criteria for Mild, Moderate and Severe Substance Use Disorders, and offers high and low probability concordance classifications.

It also produces a  hypothetical psychological profile of the individual, with up to 11 scales to indicate the presence and extent of any relevant dysfunctions, of self-awareness, and of readiness to change. The information these provide can be invaluable in facilitating more in-depth discussion, evaluation and assessment, in engaging and motivating the client, in care planning with them and in evidencing need when negotiating appropriate care and funding.

The SASSI is not intended to replace a thorough individual assessment, but to be used as a supplement to such an assessment, or as an indicator that such an assessment is appropriate.

The measure takes approximately 15 minutes to administer, and 1-2 minutes to score.

There is an adolescent version, which is suitable for use with 13 to 18 year olds and an adult version, which is intended for use with people aged 18 and upwards.
